Welcome to our SQL Bootcamp! To prepare for this course, you will need to install SQL Workbench and download the provided employee.sql file.


In this lesson, we will learn about data storage in SQL (Structured Query Language) databases. Students will be using a demo employees database and making queries to filter and search for results.

Students will also be taught about different data types that can be stored in a tabular format. Through understanding of data types, students will know how to perform logical operators across different columns in databases.

At the end of this class, you will be equipped with the ability to retrieve any data within a table with filters and operators.

1. Introduction to MySQL

6. Logical Operators
7. Relationships: Understanding Primary and Foreign Keys

In our first exercise, we will be working on our Employees database and attempting to query data based on questions similar to real life scenarios.

Students will expect to answer questions such as the following:

  1. What is the gender breakdown of the employees in our company?
  2. What is the total salary that is paid to all employees in the year of 1996?
  3. What is the average age of the employees in our company?


This lesson will be taught in two parts.

In part 1, we will be addressing how to CREATE, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE databases, tables and records using SQL. We will revisit the concept of data types and how to store data in the proper format and location.

For part 2, we will be looking at relationships between different tables in a database and how to JOIN multiple tables with our SQL queries. Students will learn how to filter and query results across multiple different tables to present desired data.

In our final assignment, we will be putting ourselves in the shoes of an SQL Database engineer to tackle different scenarios where you can challenge your SQL knowledge. The questions in this assignment are similar to use cases faced by a professional SQL engineer. If you are able to solve these questions, you will be equipped and ready to take on future SQL challenges in your workspace!
